The talking manatee

The talking manatee —

knitted, gray, small in the hand.

The boys spouting words

and moving always,

The girls observing and

commenting and sliding on

the floor,

The librarian calls them

all together and hands one

the manatee.

Like magic they all quiet

and listen as the one with the

manatee talks.
