Inherited star
A decorated styrofoam star and a cotton ball sheep with black wooden spools for feet and a red ribbon around its neck.
I inherited the star from my husband's grandmother; reportedly she decorated it (the core is styrofoam). The sheep I made in a craft activity many years ago. It's very worn and much loved.
I put up a very small tree this past Christmas; I didn't get out many decorations, maybe as many as five, not counting stockings. I left the Christmas decorations box open in my room, and every few days since Christmas I have taken one out and decided whether to keep it or get rid of it. My children in Fort Wayne have first right of refusal, of course, but some are going either to Goodwill or to the trash.
This star and sheep reminded me: inheritance is not automatically sacred. And handmade isn't always better. Both serve, but when their service ends, let them go.
