Covenant people
In one of the books of scripture I ascribe to, the prophet Moroni, in talking about bringing this scripture to the people, says: "For none can have power to bring it to light save it be given him of God; for God wills that it shall be done with an eye single to his glory, or the welfare of the ancient and long dispersed covenant people of the Lord." Mormon 8:15. To me this means that God wants us to do good things, for two reasons: either bringing glory to God, or for the welfare of His people. Since God is the Father of everyone on the earth, and His covenant is to save everyone who is Willing to repent, turn to Christ, and be forgiven (saved from sin), then His covenant people are the people who are trying to do good things. There are many good people, that is, people with good intentions and earnest efforts to help other people, be honest, kind, just, merciful, who do not yet know Christ. And part of the reason they don't yet know Christ is because we who profess to follow Christ mess it up so badly and so often! Part of following Christ is forgiving ourselves, forgiving others, confessing our sins and faults to God, repenting and changing our ways with His help, and trying again to do good.
