Why not change?
Why are we blaming autism for these traits of wanting to learn all about one specific thing and having difficulty putting our thoughts into words and being irritated by loud noises and scratchy clothing? Why are we not ALL learning something specific? Why are we not patient with framing thoughts into words? Why are we not making sounds less loud, less obnoxious, more soothing? Why are we demanding tolerance for impatient, unlikable work environments and conveyor belt schools that rush people along? Why are we not making work environments more friendly and kind instead? Why are we not allowing for differences in learning styles and interests instead of insisting our children all learn the same things at the same time?
Is it because these changes require noticing and caring? Is it because to do this we have to pay attention to each other and not just ourselves? Is it because the society around us demands certain results, on pain of flunking or pass-on-without-knowing? Is it because we would rather warehouse children like so many basketballs instead of making small groups with more adults involved? We have plenty of adults who want to make a positive difference in the lives of children; why do we tie their hands and feet with so many regulations and so much paperwork? We have plenty of people who want to parent their children and raise them to be good people; why do we insist that both parents must work fulltime in order to live--requiring other overworked adults to supervise too many children to do so effectively?
